| On very cold days, people sometimes remark that it is too cold to snow, but is this possibles? In fact, snow can fall at any temperature; indeed, snow sometimes falls in Antarctica, where the temperatures are extremely low. However, snow rarely falls when the air is very cold, as this usually indicates high pressure and dry air, conditions that aren't conducive to snow formation. Snow forms when moist air rises and attaches to dust. If the temperature is low enough, the water condenses and freezes to form snowflakes, whilef the air is too dry, there isn't enough water to form the snow. The heaviest falls of snow usually occur when the ambient temperature is around zero degrees celcius. Any warmer and it rains instead. | |
